I have heard of some v10's getting 15mpg but most people I talk to and the ones I know about generally get about 10mpg.
Your old truck may have been an exception and the new one is just being normal.

You could try a different exhaust system but I dont think its gonna help a whole lot. I gather that your truck had a manual transmission and the new one has an auto. What rear gears were in the trucks. Is one 2wd or 4wd?

My 97 ate pinion bearings on a regular basis. It ended up being a bad
casting and the whole housing was replaced. Before the replacement, 6 sets
of bearings were installed. Not sure if this is relevant to your problem,
but the noise mine made was a very low hum. When the truck was put on the
rack and run in gear while listening underneath, it was quite evident where
the noise was coming from.

Thats kinda what I was figuring and hoping for. It was real hot yesterday and the tractor was worked pretty hard. I did stick my gloved finger up to it and it was just some smoke.

I dont abuse this tractor but I do work it hard several times every summer. I also take extra care of it in regards to maintaining things like oils and grease.

I had a 6.2 diesel in a GMC that would not start in the middle of summer unless the glow plugs would cycle. Some just like to have the extra heat I guess.

I bought my JD950 from a dealer. He has a good reputation and was honest with me. My 950 came from a camp ground. Had 8200 hours on it and was running fine. Someone dropped the nose off the edge into a pond. Hot engine+cold water=bad.

They had the engine rebuilt and blew a head gasket after some use and decided to trade it in to him. He rebuilt the engine again and found the head was warped and they redid all that. He said he would stand by the rebuild and 2 years later with 250 hours on it it is running just fine.

I was told 8000 hours on a diesel is getting to be a lot of hours but I have since read a lot of inforation of tractors with proper maintainance getting 15000 hours with no trouble at all.

I have changed the oil in my 950's rebuilt diesel about 5 times now since I have owned it. I plan to really take care of things and should get a lot of years out of it.

My friend has a DK45 with loader and its a hoss around his place. Put in down into 4 low and lock in the rear end and it will push big cut down tree's into the brush pile with ease.

My friend has a DK45 Kioti with whats called "shuttle shift"? Put the tranny in what ever gear you need and run the throttle for speed. Push the clutch in and pull the lever back for reverser and go. Put the lever in the other way and go forward. This makes loader work a breeze and you have the durability of a gear transmission.<br>

My friend has a DK45 with loader. Has about 70 hours on it. Does a fine job. I have used it a lot also. Seems to run real good. We'll see how it is with 3000 hours on it!

I have this problem with my JD950 and 5 foot sometimes. Depends on the grass. Seems like fine thick grass/weeds will do this. After experimenting If I have a big field to mow I drive clockwise and it doesnt miss a thing. Go counter clock wise and it seems like it leaves a thin line of weeds standing. I guess the direction of the blade spinning gives a better cut going one way or the other. All uncut grass will be to my right as I mow and it always does a good job then?!?!

Thats how it is out in eastern kansas and western Kansas but theres not really any good jobs anywhere to make the payments. My town is about 5 miles from the big city. We got a new 4 lane hiway between and a lot of commuting is going on with good jobs there coming over here and buying up all the land they can and build a big house on it.

I dont know what the weed is called. But its a wood like substance. Usually dry and dead and its really about like a drinking straw thats dark brown and almost like wood. Splinters pretty bad. I keep my tractor at my friends place outside of town. His place was abandoned a few years back before he moved it. Anyways the place was 10 foot tall in weeds. Over the course of the last few years we have cleaned things up but the bush hog would mow over everything and leave these straw like remains about 2-3 inches out of the ground. Those would actually puncture through the rear tires. I had to patch a rear tire 2 times and the 3rd time had to buy a new tube. My buddy was walking about one day in his tennis shoes and one went right through the bottom of his shoe as he took a step. We had to go to the ER and have them pull it out of his foot. I never got a flat tire anywhere else last summer while mowing for my business. Just his place so I dont know if it was his weeds that had over grown from previous years causing problems or what. Heck of it was most of the 2 inch stems would fold right over as you walked along or drove but everyonce in a while there would be a stiff one that would go through the tire. Also pieces of bailing wire are not real good on tires either.

I was at a bone yard yesterday and stumbled across this item. A John Deere Power Plant. Appeared to be a 1 cylinder radiator cooled unit with a PTO coming out of it?! Anyone know what this was and used for and could fill me in on it?

I'd check the battery cables/connections. May be a failing battery at the colder temps. I'd also put some diesel winter additive in it also. Helps with water and the diesel gelling but doesnt it also add to the cetane value doesnt that make the diesel burn a little faster/hotter for easier winter start up?

My JD950 with a rebuilt diesel hadnt run in about 3 weeks and fired right up here in Kansas last weekend when it was about 4 outside.

White snoke also may be a sign of some water in the fuel too.

Thats not an uncommon thing for a 1ton work truck to do. The new ones are supposed to be good to 23000lbs. I have heard of people pulling 30000lbs with the right trailer setup. Its just amazing what they can do now.

I looked at my JD 950 tech manual and could not find anything specific to oiling so I would assume it must get it from the gears slinging oil about. The more I think about it the more I wonder if running in 1st low while rototilling or going extra slow while mowing is actually bad or not as good for the insides as you are running the PTO and you arent in 2nd gear.

I cannot tell you for sure I have been looking in my 950 tech manual and all I can say is my 950 is a 1982 model with a single stage clutch. Serial numbers greater then 20001 have the 2 stage clutch so yours has to be older then 1982. They were made from 1978 to 1988.

If you need to know anything let me know I managed to score a full tech manual off ebay many months back.
